NEW CARS FOR SEPT... MOTM RACE # 2

Damn. Definitely living up to your title. Maybe time to promote you to Dr. Frankenpine. Although that boat may be technically hand made plywood with all those layers of wood.

The floor is open for discussion for members (and non members that were unable to avert their eyes)

When addressing the founding member of this charter he asks that you address him as

"His Awesomeness, the Fastest of the Fast"

Or the more colloquial title :

"The hardest working man in the business of making little toy cars."

Thank you brother Nick, but there is no cursing allowed in the LAST meetings.
Brother Kinser is sensitive to such things.

Yep. That is something of a running theme for me with these cars.

It is a good way to build a light structure. Punching holes in thin plywood and then gluing it all together. If the holes are offset then it gets remarkably strong for it's weight.

Fill in those holes with balsa (alternating grain) and sand flat and it is like no material I have ever handled.

Rather than Dr. Frankenpine, I see it more like Pincasso and 3D painting combined.

Joe,

Are you actually using a coarse buffing wheel to shape your car here? Or was the buffing wheel just providing great background imagery?

Wow dog!! That is one sick ride you crafted and probably one of the most detailed racers built to date- looks like something that might be kept under lock and key at Area 51, thanks for sharing and can't wait to see it in action.

.

Thanks brother Corvid,
Yar matey!
I intend on sailing this craft directly into the rail at full speed!
Now. Take up the mainsail, and dang the torpedoes!

Hi Paul,
Non members of Laserman's Awesome Speed Team are especially encouraged to address His Awesomeness using the more formal moniker.

Brother Kinser!

So good to see you at this first LAST meeting!

Please join the roundtable discussion, and feel free to educate us on the wily ways of the wind.

As an aircraft mechanic your insight into these dealings must be quite singular.

Ok. I can see some new faces in the crowd, and perhaps some of the members are shy, so I will kick off the proceedings with a brief history on the idea behind The Bernoulli Car.

Long before the first stone was laid on this Grand Imperial Awesome Speed Lodge in which you now sit, the idea of steering with the wind was floated about with some of the core members of the speed team.

It seemed as if most builders were concerned with mimicking the aero of an airplane. This seemed especially true with regard to the body but the fenders seem to have a much greater impact/ profile on the aero than the body.

Sailors figured out a way to tack a sailboat (essentially sailing into the wind) by using the Bernoulli Principle.

The same thing that gives a wing lift will fill up the sails and propel the boat forward.
It is like a wing standing straight up.

All that is needed is to create a "sail" such that the air is moving faster on one side of the sail than the other.

After I floated this idea of The Bernoulli Car to brother BR he suggested that I name it Newton's 3rd Law instead. I was perplexed by this and naturally assumed sarcasm until I came across this video.

OK. So what benefit can possibly be achieved by using these sails?

The idea of having .5 degree toe in on the DFW will decrease the friction on that wheel.

If the car is staged slightly off the rail then the car will be able to cruise down the hill without hitting the rail and will only steer into the rail when it reaches full speed at the bottom of the hill.

From that point on the Bernoulli Principle should be able to hold the car to the rail due to the "lift" pushing the car in that direction.

Brothers, I invite you to chime in on any thoughts or ideas pertaining to what must surely be "the next big thing".

Refreshments and cupcakes will be available in the lounge at the conclusion of the meeting.

Back in Jan 2013, JB07 ( Jerry Bailey) came back to racing- If I remember correctly- he was the first builder to put the wheel up at 45 degrees and reshape the fender to get lift towards the side needing drift. ( If I have it scrambled- someone help me out) While he was racing- he was a machine- super hard to beat. Many were puzzled by why he did such a strange thing, and then how could he win? He may have even built cars like that earlier. It was not a slam dunk to get speed with lifting a wheel like Jerry could. These are Jerry's badges, not mine.
clap
Now the majority of SS pro do the wheel thing.

Certainly JB07 was a dominating force to recon with back in those days, so few ago.

So as you choose Mr L.A.S.T., or Mr. H.A., as you would prefer.

Good day to you Sir!

Oh OK Paul,
I guess we go back a ways, so I will allow for the title
"The hardest working man in the business of building little toy cars" but that means you are in the clique.
I will send the proper paperwork to cancel the disinvite PM.

I have a wind steerable car I've been meaning to send in. Not necessarily a sail car, more like airfoil tuning as an accompaniment to dfw steer. BTW Joe, your new car is insane!!!

Thanks D4D!

I have high hopes of not handing it over to Paul!

Brothers! This seems to bring to a close the first LAST meeting.

Please enjoy the refreshments in the lounge.

Do to budgetary constraints and the pursuit of other projects I will have to step down and remove myself from the office I hold in this fraternal clique.

If nobody will step forward to fulfill my duties I fear that the clique will be forced into an indefinite recess.

I hope some of the brothers here will join me in my new clique when it is formed.

"The Knights Templar of the PWD"

If disinvited to join this new clique then you will most certainly receive a PM stating such.

Godspeed,
Laserman
The Hardest Working Man in the Business of Building Little Toy Cars

Oh Please excuse me D4D. Before we split. Do you have a photo or more information about this wind steering car?

Thanks,
Joe

I sent you a pic of it a while back it's called "Prometheus".
