Sorry I am just now getting around to updating this thread. This week has been incredibly busy at work, and I just have not had time. We made some major headway on the car tonight, and will be finishing it up tomorrow. I was starting to think it wasn't going to get done. I got the axles prepped. We just did a mild polish job on them really, starting at 1000 grit and going to 3000 followed by a liquid polish. Got the wheel hubs prepped too using Q-tips and Meguiar's plastic polish, (had it laying around so we used it) and pipe cleaners. We drilled pockets in the side of the car and added tungsten weights and I drilled an extra hole at the back to bring it up to 5 when we scale it tomorrow night. The body is sanded, primed and painted and looks pretty damn good for a rush job. Just need to get some decals applied, mount the axles and wheels, and do a couple of test runs and we should be ready to go. My little sidekick worked faithfully by my side the entire time and finally passed out about 10:30 while we were waiting for the primer to dry. Thanks again for all the answers and help! I will update again tomorrow sometime.

Here's some pics from tonight

Thanks, I like the color. He wanted blue so I got with a buddy of mine and we custom mixed that color. It has four different pearls in it. And he had a blast playing with the tools. He loves getting his hands dirty.

Well our first race was a huge success! The car came together nice, despite a few mishaps. I woke up this morning to paint that had not cured, something was off and it would NOT dry. So I ended up having to rattle can it instead, UGH. During the final assembly, about thirty minutes before the weigh in was scheduled to start I broke the DF axle while attempting to bend it.

Since there was no viable option for getting a replacement at the last minute I ended up scavenging an axle out of one of my old cars. I didn't even clean it up I just stuck it in, as it was already pre-bent. We got it together just in the nick of time and made a couple of runs down my wife's door mirror to get it turning correctly. I graphited the wheels in the truck on the way to the race.

We actually had some decent competition, with a couple cars coming close to beating ours, but in the end they just didn't have enough. My son won every one of his heats and ended up taking First Place. I am tickled with how well the car performed, but next year we will be starting a lot sooner. Thanks again for all the advice and help, it made a huge difference!

And the winner.......

Congrats to team Ironcar!

That was really down to the wire, there! I think every derby season I walk away wishing that we'd started earlier (regardless of how we did!), but I've never cut it that close. Glad it all worked out for you!

Congrats! Looks like one happy scout. Glad everything worked out.

With just a foam block for a stopper it is a good thing you didn't have an extended wheelbase.
