For fun and practice I got Nic a Pinecar racer to sand on. Going to have him try his hand at polishing the axle after hes done sanding the block to shape(thin wedge). When hes done with one side of the axe how to polish the other side with out scratching it? Wont chucking it in the drill gaw up what he just polished? Once he gets that figured out its on to notching a groove on each side. Going to go to harbor freight and buy the boy a file as an early stocking stuffer./images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

Not sure if there is a good way to get the other side polished without gnawing it up in a chuck. If you have a Dremel it typically uses a collet system to hold the item. The collet does not "bite" into the item to hold on to it, but rather clamps the entire surface instead. It may be worth a try.

My friend medicine man is a jewelry maker with lots of unique tools, just got off the phone he said we could use his dremel to our hearts delight til Nic gets one of his own, seems I saw one at a garage sale last summer, sure theres another one out there for a bargain make a good Christmas present for the boy. thanks for the great tip/images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

Dd4h says he cuts the one piece axles and drills the holes. If you can do this it would solve the problem.

This would allow you cant if your wanting to. When I have done this, and it was prior to when I understood how to get a good finish, I just reversed the axle. As I recall, the chuck (1/2 drill) was deep enough so the freshly polished end was inside the jaws. To check how big the open cavity is behind the jaws, take a q-tip shaft or something soft a clamp down on it to see where the jaw marks are.

Can an axle be over polished? I polished mine as follows, 2000, 4000, 6000, 12000, then I used 14000 diamond paste then 50,000, 100,000 and finished with 200,000 diamond paste on a leather strop I made. then polished them with a product called Dry Wash polish on a piece of leather, then wiped them clean with a 3M micro fiber cloth.
I bought a set of dd4h axles 092s and paid to have them polished. my polishing out shines his and under a micro scope, 40x I believe, the surface of my axles appear smoother than dd4h. But my spin tests suck.

Many have different opinions on this. My answer would be, "Yes you can over polish an axle".
