Daughter's Powder Puff Derby car won today! Wasn't close. Her troop actually took 1-5 in Speed.

I always offer to have a build day for the troop. 2 years ago, 3 girls took us up on it. Along with my daughter, they finished 1-4 in Speed that year.

This year, only one girl came. She and my daughter were 1-2, lol.

The Girl Scout race always has a theme. This year it was "Up in the Sky". After several ideas...aircraft carrier, Superman car, different birds...and ended up with this, on her suggestion.

The Sharknado car:

They have a 4 lane Best track. I think it's about 30' long, so I guess BT would refer to it as a 32'?

Her times were 2.60, 2.62, 2.60, 2.60. Last time was 2.60004. I wanted that 2.59, but oh well, lol.

Car is a basic thin wedge, lead weight, Dynasty Rage wheels, stock axles done by her. DD4H bore polish and Red Rocket on the bores. Pledge on the axles, DD4H graphite.
The L/F wheel is dirty because we had the 4 wheel touching rule...so it BARELY touched, and I rubbed graphite on the tread so it wouldn't grip at all.
Tuned it to go 4" in 4'.

Oh yeah, she won 2nd in Originality, too. They liked the Sharknado theme.

The other girl's car we helped with is the same car, she did her own axles. Used a different bore polish and wax, and XLR8 graphite on hers. She ran 2.65, 2.64, 2.64, 2.63. 3rd place was a couple hundredths off of hers.

Congrats and thanks for posting! Isn't it funny you offer and the don't show??

Thanksk
Yep, 2 years ago, we did 4 cars. My daughter's, and 3 other girls from the Troop. Finished 1-4. (my daughter was 3rd, lol....she essentially helped 2 of her friends beat her)

After that, they wanted me to help with builds for the whole area. Not sure how I was going to manage that, but I ended up having shoulder surgery for the 2nd time in Feb 2013, so while we offered to help our troop, I just didn't have a huge effort in me at that point.

So last year, we helped with 2 other cars, if I remember right. One was a craftmanship-only ride, which we just had the girl do her axles and bores, and the other was a decent little race car.

And this year, one other girl came. /images/boards/smilies/confused.gif

This was the girl's first year in Scouts, and the Dad had no clue, so I decided that if nobody else was going to come, we were going to build them nasty this year. Talked her into a wedge. I cut and drilled the exact same body my daughter's car had. Only difference was she did her axles, and we let her use a different bore polish and wax and graphite. We didn't change the process, only the products. Kept the Red Rocket, DD4H bore polish and DD4H graphite for ourselves. Oh, and the Dynasty Rages...recycled those off my son's Derby car from a few months ago. (District winner)

Note: We did not even re-prep the wheels. Blew them out with air, and just added new graphite. We did clean the axles off and re-Pledge them, but that's it. The wheels had the same Red Rocket that was put on in February and run 9 times.

Way to go!! Love the shark adds to the theme.

Yep, we had some sharks left over from 2 years ago, when the theme was "Under the Sea".

Here's the car we built for that one, and yes, I built it backwards. Worked okay, though. I've learned some more since then.

So...theme was Under the Sea. Car had a Hammerhead shape. A Hammerhead shark on top. Painted with Rustoleum Hammered gray (shark colored) paint.
My daughter came up with all that, but I am responsible for the pictogram on the rear, which got her a trophy for Originality.
Who gets it?

btw, this car's first run was slow for some reason, then it sped up and ran the fastest ET of the day, but got 3rd overall because of the slow first run. Led to me buying a test track, lol.
