How was the race????
created a new thread with a video of he race. We won first place and set the track recored twice http://www.pinewoodderbyonline.com/post/girl-scouts-jersey-shore-powderpuff-champion-daisy-division-8072094?pid=1291908759

Thanks to everyone posting congratulations in my video thread for my daughter's race last week. We are taking this car to the boy scout district race to run in the modified division and was wondering what everyone thought about the times the car ran.

Race 1 - 2.6283 188 mph
Race 2 - 2.5741 192 mph
Race 3 - 2.6154 189 mph

The second race was run in the middle lane which seemed to be the fastest lane. I was wondering what everyone thinks these times would project out to on a longer track. I am not sure if the boy scout race is on a 35 or 42 foot track. and would i be able to go faster if i add a couple ounces of weight into the car, there is no weight limit in this modified class ??

Are you running with graphite or oil? Oil seems to tolerate more weight on the axles than graphite does. Though 7oz will probably be fine for either lubricant.

Running those 1g wheels, though, I wouldn't add any weight. Running in normal configuration, if you add weight, you run the risk of them breaking in the transition.

Just go with what you have, and build next years' car together with the goal of winning the boys' race too.

We were using Graohite , and if i remeber correctly i read that the boy scout race is graphite only.

My concern would be running the 7 oz on ultra lite 1 gram wheels. will i gain enough speed adding the weight or will too much weight on the thin wheels actually slow me down

Thanks crash, that is what i was thinking, i wanted to flip the rear wheels but didnt think i would be able to have wheel spacer shipped in time. maybe i will just relocate the weights i already have

So I am trying to tweak the car to race the boys on Saturday, I moved 2 whole oz. Of weight behind the rear axle. 1.5 oz on thebumper and .5 oz right behind the axles. I have 1 oz of weights on the scale next to the car. What would be the most optimal placement for that ounce of incremental weights? Dont have to worry about staying under 5 oz , it is a modified division

So I spent the afternoon tuning up the car and this is what i finished up with :

Settled on 5.5 oz. of total weight with 2 oz. behind the rear axle - 3/4 in. COM
drilled out some wood for the weight plate behind the axle under the car to sit flush with the bottom of the car and not drag on the rail
dialed up to 5.5 in of steering
closed some of the gap on the rear wheels to help stop the wiggles in the home stretch
closed off the weight pocket under the car with clear tape
loaded up the graphite & cleaned the wheels with alcohol pad

Then i called it a night.

Thanks for all the great advice from everyone .... also i pulled the trigger and picked up a small drill press today so box stock here we come !!

nice job. how bad did you beat them by?

EDIT: saw the race in the other thread. it was hard to tell, but it looks like you took care of the wiggles.

It was alot harder to film the race for some reason , last week those track stands to lift the track off the floor probably made the biggest difference. and there were some kids on the floor in front of me. i wanted to film from the end of the track straight ahead but i couldnt get the scoreboard from that angle.

What an interesting run this has been ,

7 heat races
7 wins
2 trophies
1 happy kid

Funny thing i noticed that the girl scout event was far more competitive than the district race i attended.

And just now putting my order in for a set of Mid America Dynasty Wheels and paid the registration to ship the car off to Nebraska.

What a ride !!

Got a copy of the race results from the Mid America Derby and figured it would be a fitting close to this thread. She didnt break the 3 second mark but sure was close. Ended up 31 out of 66 cars so pretty much right in the middle.

Would love to hear everyone's opinion on the race times. Full disclosure i probably rushed the wheel prep and could have done better. But when i was taking off the other set of wheels the whole rear axle slot cracked and fell apart. the whole rear end of the car was repaired and held together with gorilla glue. After obliterating the axle slot i was just in a rush to get the car back together and the wheels on and packed up to ship. Really proud of this little car and now it can retire in peace /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

Build another and race with us. Make whatever you think you did wrong, right. You can even get the kids involved; there's no reason racing needs to stop.

Going to try my best to have at least 2 cars before June 4th, if all doesnt go well there is always July /images/boards/smilies/biggrin.gif
