You should grove it. It holds lube longer. Use the square needle file in your needle file set. If you use the square file to take off the crimp marks (it's just big enough to take them off), and groove it right there it will be just about optimal. If you can, practice on a couple of axles first. It's worth it to buy some extra's at the scout shop. Be sure to use the round needle file for your bend groove, cut it after the other grooves.
