Put a Speed Grove in Axle or Leave Straight and Polish

Working on Axles running cub scout graphite lub. Should I cut a grove into axle or just polish?

You should grove it. It holds lube longer. Use the square needle file in your needle file set. If you use the square file to take off the crimp marks (it's just big enough to take them off), and groove it right there it will be just about optimal. If you can, practice on a couple of axles first. It's worth it to buy some extra's at the scout shop. Be sure to use the round needle file for your bend groove, cut it after the other grooves. Polish them up real good and then make your bend. /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

Thanks, I noticed you state to use a square file for the grove. You shouldn't use a round file for the speed grove?

The round one is to small for the speed groove, it's the only one to use for the bend groove though. /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

How deep do you suggest the grove be? on my caliber the nail starts about .07-.08

Is .06 deep enough? Too deep?

I think if you take a third of the thickness of the axle it's good. Don't take half of it, that's to much. Those BSA axles are somewhat weak.
