If your use a hammer to bend your axles....you might be a Red Neck !! Which, to me. being a Red Neck is perfectly fine cuz I are one. But you don't have to be a dumb Red Neck. Let's do some common core math together. Billy has a 3 wheel rail rider and used to bend 3 axles by drilling a tight axle hole into a piece of hardwood at a given depth and tap the axle head just right with a plastic hammer. But the "just right" part of using such a technically advanced system created an undesirable and rather large Uh Oh pile of axles. Billy , being a not so dumb Red Neck bought a jig to drill 2 rear canted axle holes. With two less axles to bend how many axles does Billy now have to bend. If you guessed 1 you get an A+. Billy refuses to lay down 80 George Washingtons for a tool to bend 1 axle and chucking an axle in a vise an tap the axle with a hammer and screwdriver (just right) isn't something Billy is excited about either. Billy, being the ever so clever not so dumb Red Neck had an epiphany about using a small C CLAMP in some way to slowly CONTROL the amount of needed bend. The problem is Billy, the not so dumb Red Neck still lacks that one extra chromosome to figure out how to build such a brilliantly conceived design. Surely this Forum has the brain bank to help Billy figure this one out, saving himself and many others that may want to build a copy for themselves and save the 80 GW's as well. Or, better yet, is there some one out there that has already beat the system by building a way to CONTROL, CONTROL I say the amount of bend, and if so how ? Necessity, being the mother of invention Billy is now ready for some ideas..... BTW Billy uses AWANA axles and not in need of an axle shaper and wheel alignment tool. But he has all sizes of C CLAMPS......

Since Billy already shelled out the Washingtons for a jig to drill the rears with 3 deg cant perhaps he should have just bought the 5 bushing clear jig that also drills steer into his car then he wouldn't have to be scratching his head.

Now Outlaw that's an excellent idea. BUT you outta know by now that Billy tries to do the most with the least. Don't ask why that's just the way his mind works. And you should also know he didn't buy THE BLOCK, SILVER BULLET or any of the other high dollar jigs. Nope, he went straight for the $18.95 one that drills 2 1/2 degree canted rear holes that also allows him to extend the wheel base. drill a raised hole for NDFW and a regular height DFW hole. With that being said he ain't about to pay $120/30ish for the clear bushing jig to build 1 car a year for his Granddaughter's AWANA GP. Billy may be scratching something but it certainly isn't his head. His mind never stops trying to figure out another way. And not to brag, that's not Billys way, but even with all the brain fart's his overworked brain allowed to slip by with his early February build, ESPECIALLY a very much less desirable DFW axle /wheel combo that was much , actually very much less desirable than the silky smooth 20 second count free spin time without lube combo he worked on for about 3 hours to get right only to misplace, never to be seen again, and had to go to the UH OH pile of axles and pick the best of the worst. The difference was enough that Billy's certain the back up wheel/axle combo cost her at least a 10th and using $4.99 graphite all around she went undefeated, won 1st in speed destroying the field. Only 1 heat was remotely close and it was a car length plus a gap all while setting a new all time track record on a 45' Computer Timed Best Track that has been used for around 10 years. But Billy get's your drift and appreciates the input. And most of all he's still your PWDO pal. Billy will talk to you later. He's gotta eat while it's hot. So please don't get bent around the axle with Billy. Later !! LOL Brother......LOL

1. Use drill and dremel to cut notch as seen above.
2. Use something to hold axle just below notch.
3. Use band saw to cut 1/4 in thick length wood block from left over derby body.
4. Lean block against underside of axle head and tap.
5. Profit.

Bending an axle. If the process is good enough for one of the fastest racers ever, its good enough for Billy.

BRR , Billy's seen that vid and he certainly thinks that's a fine way to do it and Biilly's certainly not KNOCKING it (no pun intended) . But with his trembly hands and all but gone reflexes the knock on the screwdriver against the axle to end up with the desired bend is hard for Billy to achieve. He actually struggles to get out the door and make it to the work shop. He's just exploring a possible different way to have a little more control with the degree of bend. DD4H is without a dought a genius and a true PWD Champion and his willingness to share with the world the way to get by for the guy on a budget and no axle bender is commendable and his products are great. And since you brought it up, Billy just asked a question here, he wonders if DD uses that process with a car he's taking to an event to race the fastest of the fast ? He's just curious about that one but he would be interested to find out. Opps, gotta go Billy needs his walker. And oh he said to tell you that's he hasn't failed to build the bender yet he's just discovered 3 different ways not to build one. Good info as usual BRR. And as Smokey Yunick said "you're not racing the cars, you're racing the rule book". Keep on killing' it Brother, I hear you're a bad man.......in a good way !!

BIlly's been there, done that BG and he actually likes the soft wood vs screwdriver. He's just trying to get a little more control and a better visual on the degree of bend. Once you smack it with a hammer there's no going back, it is what it is plus even slight hammer smacks may come at a different angle and velocity. But you have a fine method there but there's no Profit on this one as this is an open source experiment. LOL......Thanks Brother !!

Nice to see some good-natured humor. Me thinks Billy has been arounds da block once or three times or so....
AHHHHHH .......BRR you might say that !! LOL Old Billy Boy's an old school 60'/70's drag racer that owned and operated a very successful Performance Custom Exhaust Shop for a quarter of a century. Building custom systems for some of the baddest "True Street Cars" and Hot Rods around his neck of the woods. Now he's an old codger with failing health and hoping he's around to build his Granddaughter another winner next year for February's AWANA Grand Prix !! Dang it gotta go again Billy didn't quiet make to the bathroom......man I hate it when that happens!! Hey Billy, wait up i'll get you another Depends.

Hahaha Smokey???... I read on through that and thought ya meant “the Bandit”

Maybe Billy can find a block of wood 3/8" or so "drill axle relief hole" & a triangle compass.
clamp them both in the vise then bend the pointed end with a pair of hog ring pliers.
Maybe ?

It's not about having the right tool but knowing how to use the tools you have

Thanks Jupiter. I'll tell em and he'll be excited bc he's old enough to actually have a pair of hog ring plires. In fact he put small pieces of duct tape on the plires indents and has been using them for years to pull axles and twisting axles for steer tuning. He loves beating the system with get by methods. Thus the Red Neck Axle Bender. For him it's not the kill but the hunt. BTW Billy said to tell you he was going to having a sign made usuing you quote " it's not about having the right tools but about knowing how to use the tools you have" and hang it on the head board of his bed. That Billy, he's always had to do the best he could with what he had !!

I came into this world with nothing & I still have most of it left...

My grand father told me you can build a tractor with a hammer a screw driver & a good set of channel locks, if you know what your doing.
Billy & the boys will be just fine

cut a slot in any piece of wood lay the axle across & place the driver bit in the chuck of a drill or arbor press, watch the handle role & you have a repeatable press. Maybe dig up a couple of washers out of a can somewhere & try that for a base ?

Here ya go....D4D came up with this alternative

BRR........Larry used my wireless keyboard as a tack hammer to hang his latest pin-up. Either the vid doesn't have audio or Larry foo-fooed my volume up/down buttons because i can see it but no audio. Larry was curious of what that type of pliers is called and are they are tool truck speciality item or available at stores or online ? Sorry gotta go again. Larry had dream that ate a giant marshmallow last night. When he woke up his pillow was gone. We been having' to tote him back and forth to the little room all day. From the sound of things i think it's time for another run. Opps to late, i always thought foam pillows very kinda vanilla colored. Didn't know they made em in chocolate too !! L8R
