This question is for those of you who make your own wheels. I just got a metal working lathe and I'm getting my process and tooling together so I can try to make my own SS wheels. After making a mandrel to hold the wheels, I'm assuming I would make the following cuts to true the wheel and reduce weight while keeping inner lettering:
1. Turning cut to true up the outer tread and make it concentric to the bore
2. Facing cut to true up the inner rim
3. Some kind of left hand boring bar cut to remove material from the inner rim of the wheel. I'm assuming you'd leave the outer edge (open side) of the wheel a little thicker to keep it stronger
4. Another boring bar cut (right hand this time) to shave down the extra material on the inner hubs
5. Flip it over, put it in a 3 jaw chuck (center) and use a shaped cutter and a plunge cut/scrape to create the coned outer hub
Do these sound like the right steps? Any suggestions?
Any photos/videos of your mandrels or process would be greatly appreciated.
