A little background about me. Im a young dad of only 28 years of age. I have a 7yr old step-son and a 3 month old son. We just finished my first pinewood derby car and won 2nd in Tigers and 1st overall and took 2nd in Tigers in Districts and 8th overall in districts. This was my first car and since I've built it I have learned A LOT! Needless to say my wife says I'm obsessed, hense the name, but I still am learning and need help. Here is our Pack Rules http://storage.buckeyecouncil.org/event/docs/246/2013_hetuck_rules_back_of_flier_pdf.pdf I'm spending a lot of money on tools (from here), a newer multi speed 4200 dremel, I have a miter saw, and drill press. Basically I'm buying everything on the site so I can do whatever I need to do based on advise. My questions are this: What body design is the fastest? Or proven to work the best for speed. What angle do you bend your FDW to for rail running technique? What COG have people used for best speed results? Fenders or no fenders and what's the advantage (my son liked the speed racer car with fenders)? I'm not looking to race in national or pro's or anything like that. I just want to win the pack race and districts every year so when we show up year after year everyone tries for second place

So any tips I should adhire to or advise people want to give I'm all ears. Any secrets people have or ideas to try I'm willing to try (have 354 more days til next years race to test and tune). I know there's a lot of people with secrets, heck I even have 1 that I do, but am willing to share if people think its a good idea. Please help and thanks for the site! It's great! Puts Derby Worx to shame

Welcome to the best site for learning everything you need to know about racing. I to am very new 3 months , but have read hundreds and hundreds of threads . You will find out that thinner car is best, weight lower in the car is best, your fdw their is no degree that's best, but between 3-7 is in the area . Cog depends on the car ,but 1/2 to 1" . Read post after post. It took me 3 months of reading and building to know enough. First buy a sliver bullet, this is the foundation for a great car.

P.s Try to hook up with someone ( a professional) in your area for tuning. Most of them will gladly help!!

"P.s Try to hook up with someone ( a professional) in your area for tuning. Most of them will gladly help!!"

Great idea! Anyone from Ohio? More specifically North Canton area?

I've been on this forum for 3 months and have found 4 professionals in my area ( Wisconsin) all have been very nice and helpful. Don't know anybody from Ohio but I'm sure their out there. Do what I did and go through the members list and see where people are from. ( this will take some time). Only look at the people with a lot of posts. They are the better ones to hook up with. League racers are best!!!

P.s when ever you post mention Ohio and somebody will hook up with you.

Obsessed, How are you? My name is Scott and I’m from your district. I’m the cub master for pack 40. My son Caleb won first at districts in Tiger. I was there all day from 8:00am till right when the tigers started to race. I had to go to a little league draft. I could not get out of it and I did not get to see any of the tiger race. My older son won the last two years at district but this year we tried something different and things did not go well for him. But Caleb took home the first place with 3 very consistent runs. I put on a workshop/seminar every year about a month before the district race, if you are interested in coming you are welcome. We bring drill press, band saw, belt sanders and a bunch of other tools. We would love for you and the boys to come.

By the way, Pack 40 placed

What district race were you at? The hetuck race in canton at the church? My son placed 2nd in tigers at districts and 8th overall. I tried something new and I think slowed his car down... id love to come see the seminar and how you guys do things. Always looking to gain more knowlege. I told my son because I'm working 12hr days 7days a week for the next 30 days id buy him his own fast track like we used at districts so he can test and tune his cars this summer. Maybe we can set something up with your seminar to use this track for demonstrations.

Im sorry, we are SandyBeaver disterict. I saw Buckeye Council and was confused. Still less than an hour away though!

oh ya. I'll travel. It'd be nice to maybe set something up for after districts. Sucks the buck stops there. Wish there was something past that for the kids that place at districts.

Well we'll see. I'm working a lot right now, but as soon as I'm done (29 days to go) ill be buying a track and let the building begin. Id love to see how other people build and share my secrets and hopefully learn some. Plus its nice to build relationships between packs and learn some other activities to do with my scouts

I tried to get some interest this past week at the Sandy Beaver round table for a Buckeye Counsel derby race. Top 3 in all districts in all ranks advance to counsel Race. Was shot down by most of the people there!

Hey when you get your track shoot me a pm and I will bring by boys up and we can do some test and tune sessions!

That sucks they shot the idea down. Guess they aren't as obsessed as we are. Ya as soon as I get the track and timer I'll definitely let you know and you guys can come run your cars and tune them. It'll be a good time.
