Top 10 Pinewood Derby Racers Of All Time

I haven't been around long enough to recognize some names or make a vote but it sounds like you guys need a poll to vote in.

Jewkes is by far number one. He pioneered the sport and dominated much like the Pettys in NASCAR. His innovations like The Block, Needle Axles, wheels, etc laid way to the speed freaks of today. From what I understand, he taught a lot of racers his methods from which the process has been improved but without Jewkes' innovations, the sport would probably be a bit slower today. Aside from personalities we must give credit where credit is due.

Just reading those 2 sentences, I would swear this is Glenn writing this. That is exactly how he would talk to you. "I have done everything for this hobby and I showed the world this and that". I would totally agree that he belongs on the list but I would still have to put DerbyDad at the #1 spot. Glenn may have showed John some things but John has run with it way farther then Glenn ever did.

Can't we run it through a computer simulation to see who is the greatest like they did for boxers from different eras on the "Rocky Balboa" movie? I mean, if they can do it on the movies...

We are seeing posts that start to touch on rating a racer not just on winning but what they taught, shared and did for the sport. If what they shared and did for the sport is going to be part of the rating, I would move 5Kids up the ladder. How many workshops, how many hours with scouts? How many hours promoting and putting on races? How many posts with answers to questions? How many posts with "how to"? How many e-mails to guys like us offering help? How many of us have benefited from having 5Kids around? Scott is not only a class act, he is always fast!

I have not been here for long and most of the names are before me but this post does make me say Scott has promoted this not just in Scouts but everywhere.. He is on forums all around helping people daily.... So if it is based on contribution Scott should have a shot!!!

Just a thought came to me. Maybe rank " Top 10 " before oil era and top 10 after oil era. "BO and AO ". Their maybe some that belong in both that have been competing in both such as DD4H.......SPIRIT..........

I have to agree with bclinn...You first need to have the criteria for which you are rating a racer. Is solely based on wins and times or are you adding in character and community involvement, etc. Once you get the criteria then as chromegsX said put up a poll and lets vote. I would also agree with Spirit good thought before and after graphite. And as for Chips well what can I say
blah
you have a lot more Xperience than me in PWD...so you should be one spot in front of me haha...but one of these days Im gonna catch ya!!!

I think the idea was based around racing success. I am not talking about any Tom, Dick and Harry race. You have to look at the top level races that drew the best of the racers and welcomed all racers. Racking up wins at WIPR would not be what this is about. Who performed at the big live races? Who performed in the top league races? Who won league championships? That is also a good tell but it also can blur because once again having multiple leagues skewed the success of some racers.

Since 5 Kids is a main subject here I think there is no doubt he has made a crater sized mark on pinewood derby in general and he has proven to be incredibly fast. I think he might agree to some extent that his glory days came at the PWDR and there might still be a little left to question as to how he would have finished at the NPWDRL. Like it or not, there is a difference and there always was a difference. When talking all out skill and speed I personally do rank 5K anywhere in the top 10 for sure.

As far as Jewkes goes, yes he did innovate. But he has not won a race in a long time and he has all the tools and knowledge everyone else has. I guess he got too worn out carrying me or maybe he got too tired from flapping his lips.

It would be nice to go back and see all the results of old races. Too bad a lot of the history has been removed and fools refuse to share it.

Now if I would have been GJ, instead of blaming DD4H for his demise (instead of his brother, the real culprit), I would have put together a car(s), submitted it(them) under another name, sent it in from another state, to see if he could still compete. IF (maybe a big IF) his new car(s) were successful, he could have then come out in public, claim his winning abilities, and probably revive his business. On the other hand, if he failed, he could just bury the secret and avoid the Embarrassment.

That is what I would call a Win Win plan.
Are you reading this GJ? If so, PM me.

Sometimes I'm really baffled as to what your motives are Opa.

Frankly, I would like to see if GJ can still measure up. But I don't think he can bring himself to enter under his own name. But if he did, would it be accepted, or is he in effect Black Balled?

However, if he did enter (under whatever name) I don't think he would make the top 5. But I would still like to see.
What brought this to my mind was the fact that many believe he belongs in the top 10, as seen in this Topic.

Glenn belongs in the top 10 for sure. When I first got into league racing he was the king. Just because he is no longer active and others probably passed him by does not mean he shouldn't be listed. Someone mentioned Richard Petty before...I'm sure ol' Richard would not fare too well if he strapped himself into a car this weekend, but I think everyone agrees he would be in the Nascar top 10 of all time.
I think Glenn's biggest problem is he needed to have credit for everyone's success. When you sell your secrets and show people how you do it, there will come a time when someone will improve upon it. When that happened and they didn't give him props, he got ticked.
Its's been said that you can get a lot accomplished if no one cares who gets the credit.

And I don't know about being black balled....blue balled maybe, but black balled never. And me? I'm just plain bald.

Anybody racing at the NPWDRL is fast. If you take all the new guys and put their cars on the track 3 years ago they would be dominating. Where did the speed come from? It came from The Block and Oil Prep Techniques and Products made available to all of us by DD4H. If those two things would not have happened we would all be struggling to keep up with our Derbyworx tools. So when you talk about the top 10 racers of all time its not even a question they both deserve to be on the list. We are in the Golden Age of Pinewood Derby information. Enjoy it and have fun!

On a side note there are still some evolutions happening in the prep department. There are some extremely talented new guys doing research. I have one rookie that I'm watching. I believe he is going to be a break out racer in the coming year.

I think that if I had to put this Xtremely hard list together, I dont think I would number them. I would have 10 best racers of all time but I would list them according to their years they raced like from 2009-2010 or whatever. This way no one person would be per say #1 or #10. As some one said, look at Richard Petty...OK well they list his chapionships and his years of racing. If you listed their achievments and trophies like the little flags that some of you have (Sub 3.0) then everyone would be able to see what they have done/or doing. Trying to please everyone is terribly hard to do, this way it is actually measured by their success, and nothing less! I also like my buddy Reso says /images/boards/smilies/thumb.gif
