Tuning board

I've tried to get the 5Kids tuning graphic printed at 3 different places (Staples, OfficeMax, local printshop) and the quotes are much more ($50+) than prices mentioned on this forum. I asked for plain paper, black and white. Is there something else I should specify/mention to get the price lower?

Just a thought, but you could try contacting Quicktime over at the NPWDRL and see if he would sell you one of his prints outright? They're normally reserved for a reward for entering a certain number of cars in the league races. I believe that's one of them shown in Hurricrane's photos above. Full color, looks like a really nice print.

got mine printed at staple for a few bucks you have to ask them to use the drafting/ blueprint printer . they print on a really light paper I think i paid less than 5 bucks

oooh and you could add some kind of legs... mine, as you can see, just sits on the top of a desk and I prop one end up with a BSA block when I am ready to tune.

I use your graphic taped to my dining room table and use a can of vegtables under the feet to prop one side up

I attached mine to the garage wall with a piano hinge. Keeps it out of the way when not in use.

+1 on the glass top suggestion. I did get by for a couple of years with and 8' shelf board. All you need is something that will be consistent. I got the but to build my tuning board when I got the cool graphic from NPWDRL. I also built my board with adjustable legs. Good luck with your tuning board.

I am moving from a sanded (320 grit) 3/4" piece of plywood to a laminated shelf board. I am expecting a small change in the amount of steer that I am seeing. I am curious if you saw a change from the shelf board to the glass top? If so, about how much? I don't have the time to build a glass topped version just now.

What I did was to leave my old tuning board up until the new one was complete. I then compared the two and found they were within .5" of each other. The glass showed less steer than the laminated shelf board.

You could use the kitchen floor as long as it is consistent.

So based on that ...does anyone go to the level of isolating the glass from the backing material (with something like 1/8" cork spacers) so as to allow the glass to resonate and amplify what you are hearing?

Also the thickness of the glass pane would affect the resonat frequency along with the distance between the spacers and the overall dimensions of the glass pane . So, am I overthinking this???

I used 1/4" thick glass, 1/2" thick MDF as a substrate, and added oak supports underneath that. The glass shop said that even the 1/4" glass would bow over time if it wasn't supported when laid flat. I leave the dust cover on the half of the table I'm not using and I still hear if there's a problem with a wheel. I wouldn't worry about spacing the glass TBR.

Ok, that is good to know. What I was thinking was that a grid of 4" - 6" on center for the cork spacers. But what I am hearing (no pun intended) is that spacers may not be required.

Yea, that is kind of what I expected ...I kind of think that I will see an inch or so moving from the plywood to the laminate shelf.

I posted prices (on another thread) I got from kinkos based of the downloads from 5kids website. I don't remember the exact prices but I know it was under 20$ for the full size (left & right drift) print out and around 5$ for the 1/2 sized print (left drift). It was the lamination that tripled the price. I got it laminated (80$) because I don't have anything long enough for it to fit on or space to have it out all the time so I can rolled it up. I had the cut it at the 2nd measure line 72" the 4 ft cut line was about 10$ less.
