I came across three pinewood derby cars from my childhood, circa 1990’s. I’m considering using the wheels and potentially the axles because the wheels do not have the lettering on the outer rim and lack the double step outer hub. The axles will not push into the holes I drilled with the SBE so they’ve got to be a bit thicker. I’m thinking about picking up a micrometer to verify. Our scout troop uses the outer edge guided plastic lanes so the outer rim rubs down the track. What do you guys think? Our rules are pretty relaxed.

It’s funny you posted this, lol. We’ve been discussing this stuff on other posts. I’d suggest you ask your race organizer if you are permitted to use the older kit. Many people believe you have to use the current year box. Do your rules address that at all? At any rate, if your rules permit the older kit you’ll find the axles in that kit larger than the axles provided in the current boxes. That is an advantage and I’d use them. Unfortunately the wheels weigh too much to consider using them.

If it was me, I would not waist anytime on those wheels or axles unless I talked with a race official like what Reece said. If you can use them and you are able to re-work them with a lathe then go for it. If the rules allow all this and money is not an issue.. maybe just get some wheels and axles from DD4H you would probably be better off in the long run. Good luck!

If your rules say that you have to use wheels and axles directly out of the box I’d suggest you ask if you can use an older box. If your rules allow aftermarket wheels and axles then I agree with Derbyboyz.
