So we race in a local club here where I live. Pretty typical rules, not real restrictive - traditional class and an outlaw class. The only thing that really stinks about it is the rules are graphite only, the last copy I got was actually revised to say dry lube only or all lube must be dry. Kinda thought it was strange that they revised the rules just to change the wording of that.

Anyway there is a family that races that always DOMINATES no matter what. Every race I think I may have something for them and every single race they are a few hundreths out on the fastest cars like clock work. Lately it is the general consensus around the club that they must be running oil. Now Im not one to jump to conclusions or point fingers infact Im pretty skeptical about just about everything Im not sure of, I dont want to accuse somebody of something that may not be true. That being said, when the cars are on the table Im always curious to inspect them closely (without touching them ofcousre) and their wheels and axles are always Super clean n shiny, no sign of graphite anywhere on the cars at all let alone around the hubs or wheels. If you look closely you can even see the lathe marks on the tread surface.

So last race Im starting be convinced that maybe something is not completely kosher. Now heres the strange thing, the race starts and as expected their three cars are a few hundreths out ahead of the rest of the feild as usual and the rest of the day goes as it typically does UNTIL the last three heats their cars start dropping time and slowing down like crazy. They became so slow that on the last or second to last heat I was able to nose out their slowest car. Oil shouldnt behave that way after 16 runs or so right?

Im interested in other peoples opinions, what do you guys think of this. I know if they were using oil it could have become contaminated or a thousand other things but I would like to hear what other people think of this?

Harrisburg eh? I'm right around the corner from you.

Oil would not typically slow down like that. Maybe after a week, depending on what oil you are using, but not after 10 to 15 runs. BUT, I would not be surprised if their wheels are getting nicked. I see that a lot on poorly maintained tracks, even if the tracks are aluminum. I really only race on league tracks and have gotten used to wheels not being damaged as a result of a race. Chewed up edges on your wheels will slow a fast car down greatly.

How is the track you race on? Does it look a little rough?

I would guess it was due to picking up the gobs of graphite that the other cars shed onto the track throughout the race. Any small amount of graphite in the wheel bore or on the nail head and it gums up the works. But kinda hard to believe that all 3 cars about the same time picked up graphite on the axles but not sure what else would cause a uniform slowing either?! Just have them add to the rules that they will be adding a small pinch of graphite to one rear wheel on every racers car before the race and problem will be solved. Sounds like they changed the rule so the guys running oil can justify using oil. Like DD4H has been saying for years- if the rule says dry lube only then use oil every time. There can't be any ambiguity in the rules in order to have a fair race.

Yea it was strange and made me really question my suspicions. When people have mentioned questionable practices from this family before the race masters response was kinda in their favor. His perspective is that this particular family always shows up and runs several cars at $10 a car and he thinks it not to be wise to possibly rub them the wrong way or utimately run them off. So my son says well we always bring a bunch of cars, does that mean that we are excluded from the rules as well?

We run on a pretty much bran new best track with just about every add on available. Very nice set up but I cant say if the joints have ever had much attention but nothin really stands out as rough.

Also its hard for me to know what really good times are and what acceptable times are for the classes because its the 49 ft. I think its like 53 over all. The faster cars usually run low 3.5s or high 3.4s

Im just gonna try n get oil legalized.

Early on my son noticed when we are waiting to stage our cars they are always turning or spinning there wheels as we are waiting.

Haha hes a pretty sharp kid!

If it helps, a typical scout cars covers a foot in about .07 sec on the flat so the extra 7 feet on the 49 foot track would add about .49 sec over the 42 foot track. So a high 3.4 second run would be about where I would expect a well set up scout car on graphite to run. Same car but on oil would land about .025-.03 faster.
Are the wheels allowed to be lightened? I know you said they looked lathe turned on the outside, are you allowed to remove weight from inside? Turned OD only doesn't really add any speed over carefully selected stock but lightened on the inside will. What about the axles? Stock axles or aftermarket? Fenders or shields on any of the cars?
What you witnessed sounds like a prep fail. The prep didn't hold on any of the cars and they all slowed. Could be they were trying something different and it didn't work this time. I'm sure that like you they were trying to improve.
If you don't have a test track of your own, you might try league racing until the next local race. Very few league racers get beat at a local deal.....or maybe you're already racing one......lol

The reason I havent raced with you guys yet is because I dont have a place I can set up a track. The irony is thats the reason I decided I should. I hate not being able to run our cars or not knowing what to expect out of them.
