What Type of Leather as final buff for axle?

My wife is running to Michaels store and I asked her to get some leather for final buff of axles we are working on today.

She asked how thick length etc... and I thought I would ask the people who know.

I was thinking of using old tennis shoes as a source of leather, but didn't know if that would be good or bad. Anyway, is the leather consumed in the process like sandpaper, or should I expect to use the same piece over and over?

Thanks in advance. I did order the DD4H DVD, but it hasn't arrived yet (just ordered), and we need to get started.

An old shoe will work just fine. I use strips cut out of an old work glove. It's important to make sure it's clean. /images/boards/smilies/thumb.gif

Thanks! I thought as much, but I've found asking here is much better than "just doing it" (over and over again)

Using leather provides a good finish. I'll polish the axle with the "suede side" of the leather first, then followed by the smooth side. Why? I think I get a better finish, but it may be all psychological. /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

+1

I went the cheap and easy route and cut a pair of work gloves. Not sure what type of leather, but another trip to the store stopping the work didn't seem to outweigh the cost of the gloves.

I can finally say that wow, it really does put a mirror like shine on the nails. Maybe not up to DD4H's axle quality, but not bad from an ice shack in the northwoods neither

I found a leather scrap bag at Hobby Lobby and it had all sorts of leather scrap pieces from a really soft supple deer skin leather to a firm boot leather. I haven't tried them all yet, as I settled in on a medium/soft leather for polishing.

Just trying to grab every advantage I can find whether mental, metaphysical or just pure psych!

When my wife found out I snipped a length of fringe off her leather cowboy coat for pinewood use, she made that ride in the short bus look inviting.

That's why it's so hard to sneak up on deer now, especially if they know you have a bare gearshift knob!
