I was wanting to polish the inside of my daughters wheel bores for her powder puff car but dont have time to order the high quality polish online. I did a little research and found someone saying using whitening toothpaste would work. does anyone endorse this as a desperation alternative or is there something else at the local home depot / auto zone that would come more highly recommended??

Also i was nervous about using pipe cleaners would q tips work in this situation ??

I just used that stuff on my headlights. It worked great. Products like this are nice to have since they work on multiple projects.

Go easy on that Plast-x though. It's pretty aggressive. It will enlarge the bore very quickly. Try it on a few scrap wheels before you try it on good wheels.

Thanks for the heads up. I have about 4 or 5 extra wheels to test on , i sanded and coned the inner hubs on the set i want to use in the race

I read somewhere that polishing in a cordless drill with q tips would take around 20 - 30 seconds .... does that sound right

I stopped using the drill to spin the stalk. Instead, I use the drill to hold the stalk in the chuck and twist the wheel by hand. There's no need to go as slow as possible since you can only twist the wheel so fast.

Do you have a Container Store nearby? I visited our local one today and stumbled on a great deal. Novus 1, 2 and 3 with a couple polishing cloths for $9.99.

That's great for the speed of polishing you need but the technique increases the probability of the bore getting out of round.

go to walmart and get some meguiars plastic polish in car section by the waxes

Hey Tre

That stuff worked wonders. i held the wheel up to the light and it reflected right in my eye /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

I held up an un polished wheel next to my trial wheel and you could definitely see a difference.

I guess it is on to the pledge and graphite next

Forgot to ask :

Should i be polishing the inner hub that i coned and the inside edge of the wheel ??

Ok

so after the first successful attempt i tried 2 more practice wheels and broke off the q tip stem in the wheel bore and couldnt get it out. i was getting a little bit of the clicking noise but then the wheel was just sliding up and down the slippery qtip and when i tried to push it or pull it it would rip. i havent started my racing wheels yet is there something i should do to stop the q tip from ripping ? more or less polish ??

Also I checked the numbers inside my wheels and i have two number 3's a number 9 and a 13 ... i am running with 2 bent rear axles and i bent front axle. should i match the tires in the rear and is there a better one to use for the dominent front wheel ??

I would NOT run bent rear axles. Run the matched pair on the rear.

I realize that after reading a little on the forums and reading the district rules for my nephews race that bent axles are sometimes not legal. I am counting on the girl scouts not inspecting too thoroughly , they havent even sent out rules. I was using the bent axles because everyone seems to say rail running was the way to go , however i am in an apartment and dont have access to a drill press and alot of tools. we recycled one of her older sisters car bodies and repainted it and i was going to add the pre polished and bent axles to give it some speed. i was counting on the polished axles, polished wheels coned hubs and almost 3 oz of tungsten weight would give us a shot at a trophy.
