car bodies

Laserman: What the .../images/boards/smilies/thumb.gif you just took your builds into the Stratosphere!
Amazing and inspiring.
How much does it weight? Should be able to easily add 4 oz ballast with that kinda built!! Envious!!
Did you drill the axle holes already?
Is it gonna get a veneer cover or that's it?

Looking forward to see it finished (keep the build pictures coming) and run on the NPWDRL track soon. What class r u gonna run it in?

Maglev

Thanks fellas,

I actually just reached into the boneyard of ideas I had drawn up.

My idea is to make a PWD car almost as one would make a real car.

With a shell and a chasis.

At least that has been an idea I have been floating for a while.

I started the evening making a reverse axle car so it is all just a crap shoot.

BASX does not appeal to me.

I like SS and I want to go into SP but keep wandering back to SS whenever I start an SP

Thanks again

Now that is one sweet car- nice craftsmanship Joe!! You didn't waste any time after Nats. either, look forward to seeing her run.

Hi Maglev,

I realized that i did not answer all your questions last night.

Like i said before I don't really stress the weight so much as long as it is around 15g I am happy. This one probably weighs about 5g as is.

There will probably be a veneer that will be cut to fit inside the triangular holes.

The axle hole was drilled from a BSA block. I drill a bunch of holes in a block and then rip it on the table saw down to about .25"

After that I put it into the laser and cross cut it. usually I will only cross cut one rear axle holder at a time so that the rest of the block with drilled holes will resist warping a bit. Then I glue the rear axle holder to the laser cut body.

Ok.

You fellas are totally selling me on this one.

I will keep you updated as it progresses.

Thanks,

Really awesome Joe! I missed it because I was posting when you posted and my post went to the next page. Sorry for not seeing it!

HA! I was just trying to catch up on posts myself.

Thanks Chris!

There have been a lot of posts lately and I can't even keep up.

All those tidbits of info are just passing by me.

@laserman
Nice design. Looks like you are having fun with that laser. I have a co worker that sells letters and other laser cut stuff on the side. I keep dropping hints for him to try cutting out car bodies. He has 3 Eagle scouts and he helped his boys win their troop races. Was hoping I could get him to catch the bug talking scout racing. Haven't convinced him yet to try making another just for fun.

What class you plan on putting that in? Doesn't look like fenders would work for it. Looks like a good one for Eliminator. BASX would work too but you already said you're not interested.

Yep.

It is a non stop party with this laser!

Thanks D4D!

I was pulling for Double Vision at Nationals.

So here is the update:

I laser cut some triangles out of 1/64" that sit onto the ledge that I etched into the wood.

After that I "tacked" it into place with some CA...

At this point I felt like it was sufficiently stiff so I used an Olfa blade to split it apart.

It felt OK but I did not give it a good CA soaking yet.

So I laid down some double stick and stuck it to a granite block. (Forgot to weigh it and had to split it off the granite block).

At this point it weighs 9.5g

I probably should have just left it on the cutting board but no big deal. I can always just stick it back there.

I used a previously crosscut rear axle holder so it might have warped a bit. This is probably OK too. I can remove the one that is there and put another in its place.

Joe, If you have an extra one of those bodies just send it my way please. I'll do any testing that you want.

A generous offer Paul.

Once I get it dialed in I will send you some parts.

I got the front axle holder on there and stiffened up things here and there.

The front piece I would like to be a curved tube that will transition into the front fenders.

Hopefully this will help to triangulate the structure.

This car is going under the working title of "Z Mustache"

Hey now I asked for 2 first! LoL

Really loving it and can't wait to see finished product.
