Common or Uncommon eBay experience?

I still have yet to find my old PWD cars form the 1980's, but I still bought an old wooden track to re-live a fond time with my Dad. So I pull the trigger on a ebay car as the first car to run on the track and have fun with.

Seems like a fair description and with a seller name like pinewoodderbyden I thought there would be no worries.

Here is what I found when i opened the undamadged box and turned the car over.

I am not going to run the car down our track even once. I've asked the seller for a re-fund but with a guy who says no-returns and as-is in his description I am anxious to see how he handles this issue.

Is it common for cars to get damadged like this? Is anyone familiar with popular ebay PWD sellers? Is there anyone worth mentioning to stay away from?

Thanks,

Paul III

wish i could help ya with this one. ask any future sellers for a pic of the underside of the car before you buy. i am sorry you got sold a damaged car, kind of ruins the experience. i dont know of any one seller to stay away from aside from the one you just bought from. i would also stay away from any third hand cars.

I bought a car from ShopVelox and it magically showed up here broke in two. I guess that is one way to keep the true performance of the cars you are selling out of view. If I am correct that is the same person that does Derby Dust. I will say what I saw of the car was not very good. Oooops, am I allowed to say this? Don't want to be negative. Most Pinewood Derby retailers have the mindset of "say whatever to make the sale" because there is a whole new group coming next year.

It can happen if it wasn't packed correctly. But, I do have one serious question. Why did you buy a car on ebay? We're here to help you build your own, and to be honest that's most the fun of it. To see what you can make and how fast you can make it go. I would avoid almost all ebay cars, thier claims don't measure up. /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

Don't worry guys I'm building. I dropped $150+ pretty quickly on this site. I just wanted to have a car to run down the track sooner than later. Figured it would make a good baseline comparison for what we build.

nothing quite like the look on the face of a dad that just bought a $100+ car and is positive his boys car will win...only to get stomped by a father son built car with the right setup. i have seen that one first hand. it never gets old.

But I must say Im with Kinser, and I am glad to see you building a car. Maybe you could recall what your old cars looked like and draw them up and build them again just like they were for Fun! I still have the car I built with my step dad, and then I built another on for an anniversary car (not going to say how many years) but with new knowledge and technology it was really fun and exciting. and it is pretty cool to see them sitting side by side. My step dad got a charge out of it too. Hey just for kicks we should all post pics of some of our really old cars, say call it "Our Old Cars"?

i know i had a few old ones, but i do not remember anything about those races, must have blocked it out as a bad experience.......

I have both of my cars that I built as a Cub Scout. Funny thing is that I can remember building them with my dad, but I really don't have much memory of the race itself. I'm sure I didn't win (and probably why I don't remember the race), but the important part was that I remember working on the car with my dad.

As a scout daddy and leader that never was a scout I hope my son and the others have great memories like you guys!

DD4H isn't there a derby den on your other page? Well I wish I had all my brothers and my cars. They were in a brief case in our dads shop when my dads shop was robbed. Guess the robbers thought they were getting something they could use. Too bad that they couldn't use them. However they robbed my brothers and me of memories. 5 brothers worth of cub scout derbies. A lot of cars and advances were lost.

Fair response I think:

There was no broken axleslot that I had noticed. ???
You can return it for a refund.
Thanks & sorry

Okay, so a friend of my parents were holding a build, test and tune day for the Scouts. We were invited to go and invited to the "open race" the following week.

I brought some of the cars and stuff I've aquied just to see if they have anything available which I might be able to do there easier than I could at home. Well I quickly got distracted since my son Declan gravitated right over to the track and cars running.

I had the Tiger car from above and figured no harm could come from him holding the car and sending it down the track. Turns out the paint was a hit and Scouts were letting Declan know they thought the car was cool. A smile lit up on his face. He brought it up to the fellow sending the cars off and had a blast chasing it down the track and then bringing it back several times.

The car actually ran better than I had expected. It was in the 3.09 range on what seemded to be about a 30' track. Nothing that would impress you guys around here, but better than my expectations for it.

I've already paid shipping to get it here and then another $5 to return it, heck I think I'll just keep the car. My kid seems to like it and I've got some great memories already with all 3 generations of us having fun today.

Now if we get the stuff form John this week and can put together a car for next Sunday then it would be cool to see how much faster we can go than our "baseline" Tiger car.
