Fenders or no Fenders

Oh OK. Please forgive my lack of knowledge, I have never seen a pro car with needle axles in person, only pictures. I just thought that when you turn the car upside down to inspect it you would be able to see a part of the axles whether it was stock or needle. What I had envisioned was like a fender skirt molded onto the car and with a modified tool you would be able to make certain measurements, that way you would have the cool factor of the fenders but also the ability to comply within the rules and compete...but if that is not how it works I will just chalk it up to one of my looked good on paper ideas haha. thank you for educating me!!

its all good, it may sound paranoid, but it is better to cover all bases to level the playing field for all than to give ourselfs headaches durring inspection. and i have had a book ful of things that looked good on paper but got shot down.

Wouldn't you be able to mic the wheels if the skirts were able to open. I have never run bearing and only thought they were a sort of myth till I saw them on the web. However couldn't you tell if they were running bearings without seeing the back side of the wheel?

I just noticed John added fenders to his store, real wood not balsa! Balsa fenders are responsible for raising blood pressure and aggravation levels all over the country!!

Thank You John

These are a killer deal if you haven't made fenders before, they're well worth it!

You could definitely make it work. I'd like to see it myself. /images/boards/smilies/wave.gif

OK forgive me, but I just dont understand how you could hide a bearing in the wheel behind the fender? Let me see if I am correct here...I am certainly not a Pro at this yet...(need a ton more time for that) but for the rest of the professional competitors whom ever is inspecting the cars before the race, what you are saying is that they would not be able to see or feel that there was an illegal use of a bearing in the wheel? If someone used an ultra lite wheel I think it would be easy to tell, just by watching it spin, it would also be easy to see if someone used razor wheels. If someone used stock wheels behind a fender, the wheel has side movement yes? then one would be able to see not only the head of he axle but also the axle shaft??? Do they look the same or are they different to where someone of you caliber could tell if the use of a bearings were being used???

I dont know, I guess I am just being difficult haha...not trying to annoy anyone, I just think it would be possible??? If I had more time on my hands I might give it a shot but there is not a chance at this point...Thoughts???

idea
HEY!!! I think I have just solved the issue...

If you give the cars a slight jiggle the wheels should have some play in them, and they make a distinct sound. If there is no play or sound when you jiggle the car then it does not race???

your not annoying anyone, i may be able to answer this.
it would be some work to take a .091 or .093 axle down enough to get a bearing on it, but it can be done. so if the fender covered the axle head you would not see the bearing. as far as the wheel moving side to side, there are different schools of thought on that, i have seen cars with only about .004 of "free play" ,so that would not always work. if you spun the wheel you would in all likelihood figure it out right away, and if not then, you sure would notice it after the first run down the track. as it would win by a LOT.
hope this helps.

Hey Brian, maybe you should put bearings on your street stock you might go sub 3.0 on Jan. 21st.
lol

Hi Everyone - I 'm opening this up again . Is the general consensus fenders on all 4 corners or just the back wheels ? What should the dimension be ? Our rules dictate a minimum ride height of 3/8 " . It appears we could only go about 1/8 ' below the body . Is this enough to do any good ? Is Balsa to fragile ? I don't have time to buy them . Thanks .

In my pea sized brain the ride height should only be a factor for the main body of the car as it is directly above the guide rail. As for the fenders they are on the outside of the car body and not directly over the rail so that could be argued...As far as the front or rear fenders go, I think I read somewhere DD4H said that it would stabilize the car more effectively on the rear and if you have the time and enough room weight wise you can put them on the front too. that's my take on it. I am a fan of the fenders so if I had time I would put them on. Time? whats that???
