I see you already painted, I hope you didn't paint around the axles holes, if you did carefully sand it away with a small piece of sand paper, just enough so the wheel hub doesn't ride on paint. Also take your time to get the axles straight into the slots. If you have the tool to drill the weight holes that will help, although I am not sure how it will fit on your curved back end. When removing wood to reduce weight I would start with a smaller drill bit and work your way up to a bigger drill bit. And as suggested by Duckofalltrades marking the drill bit for depth is a good idea and stay away from the sides and axle holes, it's easy to take a big chuck out or splinter the wood if not being careful. I did tape over the axle slots so we didn't get paint in them! As for that tool, I think I could use some plastic vice grips to hold it in place while I drill the rear holes.

I second that about the sides. Don’t get to close or you will bust it out. If you have a dremel, you can sand down thinner to the sides. Even possible to fix if you do bust out. But impossible to fix the axle slots. You will end up crooked. If you must drill out the axle slots in the middle, leave at least a half inch or more to insert the axles. But most likely not worth the risk. Get as much weight safely to the back and focus on good axle and wheel prep, you’ll do just fine. I have seen cars that based on there shape should not have been fast, but were!

Yes our second year at scouts there was a school bus that used pretty much the whole block of wood that was pretty fast.
