How to Precisely Check Alignment

Thanks Tom,

That's an excellent video and explains why you build the fastest cars! Your QC techniques are going to lift everybody's game. A good drill with perfect alignment is the most important speed tip (basic prerequisite)! Now you've shown us how to check if we got it as good as John!

Outstanding

(looks like my alignment checks were sub-standard)

Once again, a great video Tom! Looking forward to any other videos you have coming out. Keep them coming! I can see everyone that employs these techniques finding a speed increase over their current methods, myself included.

That is a great lesson on proper alignment. It sure makes me want to double check a few things!!! Thanks for posting it and I look forward to your future video's. Outstanding!!

Great video! Just wondering, where do you get the .090 pin gages? I found .090 plus and .090 minus zz pin gages. Are those the right ones? Also, any recommendations on a decent bench top drill? Thanks, and again fantastic video.

Thanks for another great video. I see you have a bladerunnner and a scroll saw on the bench. I've been contemplating getting the bladrunner. Which do you prefer?

As for the pin gauge, I'd buy which ever is cheaper. In our case, the plus or minus doesn't really matter since we're not verifying diameter. #43 is .089. A .090 minus would fit easier. A .090 plus would be a tighter fit. If you were buying them to check wheel bore diameter then I would buy minus.

If I could only have one tool I'd probably go with the Bladerunner. But I often switch back and forth between them during a build depending on the cut I'm trying to make.

Yep.

I get them from McMaster-Carr:

I get the 2" Class Z. Not sure now if they are the go or no-go but as mentioned earlier it doesn't really matter.

This video should probably come with a warning that it may cause violence against drill presses; this test is harsh and unforgiving. I was getting good drills from a cheap bench top drill press (the popular Skill model), then suddenly it was all over the place. Long story short - I bought a Proxxon and it was the best money I ever spent.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback! I really, really appreciate it.

One request: if this video or any video helped, please add comments to the comment section on youtube. One of my goals here is to counter some of the terrible information in other youtube videos and your comments might help the casual PWD builder (beginning scout dad, etc) discern the good from the bad.
