Do you tape over the axle holes when you paint? Or do you just put in some old axles to plug in the holes, and then burnish the outside with graphite before axle installation?

Tooth picks or old axles work good. If you use a good lacquer clear you don't need to do any graphite junk. Just make sure you polish that area really well once the paint has cured. A good finish around the axle hole will be almost as good a teflon washer.

Before you primer or paint just put some Oatley plumbers putty in the holes. That way you can wet sand the primer, paint or clear with out having water expand the wood and crack your paint. After you are done with your paint job just use the same size bit you used to drill your holes and remove the putty.

Just my opinion, but I do not wet sand anything on my little car for the eXact reason that Old Geezer stated! It is not that big of an area and dry sanding, though a bit dusty, is safer and faster! Primer and wood are porous and will they absorb water. Try all kinds of polish and use what works well for you. I personally like Meguiars. Best of luck to you!

As I read this thread, I am wondering if any of you leave the bottom unpainted? I am considering doing that. Perhaps put a thin coat or 2 of clear coat on it. Any thoughts?

WOW! This is a very old thread. It is SOO old (and so am I now), that I dont even paint anymore. But previously to answer your question, no I didnt not waste my time or materials painting the bottom of the car and it turned out to be the best idea we were challenged once that our car was not made out of the pine block provided in the kit. I have a pic on here of our car called the Flash somewhere...
