Walgreens Q-tips

MERKIN THE WORLD!!!!

My wife recently went out and bought the equate brand qtips from walmart, me being curious measured about 20 of them 18 of them measured at .098.5. I think thats just about right, I just wanted to pass that on because if your like me the nearest walgreen's is 65 miles away.

Far from a pro here and hopefully they chime in but I use digital calipers.

Depending on what is close by me at the time I'll either use a 0"-1" micrometer or and analog veneer caliper. Either will work but I find it more accurate to use the micrometer. Caliper is quicker though. Just my preference.

Probably splitting hairs here but a single measurement would only be accurate if diameter is uniform the entire length of the shaft. Probably better to measure at several points.

I take an old wheel that ive previously polished out multiple times and use that to gauge which stems I use. If its too loose in my old test wheel bore I use it for something else. The ones that fit snug, I use to polish up my new wheels. Not only does it allow me to remove the skinny ones, but the ones that are really to big, running them thru the old wheel bore compresses them down to the size I want.

I gather however, over time, the old wheel bore will continue to widen out bit by bit....at some point ill switch to another old used wheel.

What was the other brand that measured the same?

Was this what you were looking for?

Regarding the Walgreen's Q tips: I bought some of the recommended type from the local Walgreen's here in Wake Forest, and they won't even begin to fit through a hub.

Found some at the Dollar store that work great, though.

Just some information... if they fit through the hub they are too small and will not polish the bore.

OCD... you are right, .101 is too big, I have bought a ton of these and I have not experienced a whole package that are that big... a few yes, but not all.

Can you get decent polishing results using a fluffy pipe cleaner as opposed to a q-tip stem?

I'm still feeling very leery of q-tip stems, due to the issue of possible bore enlargement. I wonder if it's not a problem for most, given that a lot of people run axles with .092" thickness. But for stock axles, would bore enlargement be a greater issue?

Just thinking out loud. Not making any authoritative statements here.

if you don't want to use Q tip stems try using fiber optic swabs. I have had good results with them. john sells them on his website.

What size do you use, also do you think they sell a cover tip that you could slide over the metal tip on pipe cleaners?
