Inside out front axles?

Hey TAG,

Thanks! That is perfect!

I am sure you must also have tried steel polished to the shine of an axle head as a washer.

The fact that you still prefer Delrin would lead me to believe that perhaps the shape of the axle head has some bearing on the matter.

Or perhaps it is any of a number of other things such as cantilever or vibration.

Going on the premise that it is the magic of a polystyrene wheel on a polished axle head.

Meaning the material, and the shape of the contact point, are the important factors...

It kind of makes me wonder if Bracketracer wasn't onto something earlier in this thread?

He said:

"You would need to make an axle with the "head" in the middle and then bend it down! With a push on retainer on the outer end just to keep the wheel on when you picked it up."

Just thinking aloud. Thanks so much for the input. TAG

laserman, have you weighed those fenders or the whole chassis less weight and wheels?

You have a ton of side surface area there plus what you added to the frontal area. I have concerns that you cannot overcome the aero drag by the tiny gain you'll make riding on the axle head.

The artist in me thinks it's an awesomely cool design but the racer in me has reservations. I need you to prove the racer in me wrong!

Hey Bracket,

I hope you are feeling well. The whole thing was weighing about 13g before I put the weighted block in there that holds 22 cubes. (1/4")

I think that the majority of the car "hides" behind the front wheel fenders. The nose is a little lower than the tail pipe. The bentwood nose will probably slow it a bit on aero but it stiffens it immensely. perhaps I will cover it with Monokote or clear tape or the like.

The mag wheels are my only indulgence. I know it seems silly for such a detail after working so hard to minimize skin friction, but I was unable to resist. It may make it a tad lighter up front though.

Thanks,

Hey Derek,

Thanks for the "C" clip idea. That had never occurred to me.

Best,
