Car weights

The X3 fenders won Street Stock this month...

When HurriCrane was running the wheel weights, his cars would wiggle , robbing him of his speed. The speed of the weight was in the aero affect it had in the wheels. He was faster with wheel shields because it had the aero affect without the wiggles.

I had eight sets of wheel weights that I used on cars. They worked great on Basico at APR. We were not allowed to use wheel shields but we could use wheel weights. Cars still wiggled (more like a hard sway, especially in the transition) going down the track though, compared to the cars I didn't have the weights on.

Were those the full circle tungsten wheel weights or the half round Puma Weights?

all cars are not built the same. What might end up 0.005 on one car could only end up 0.001 on another... Or, it could go the other way
You're welcome.

I'm not sure why NYC is banning wheel weights this year, you can clearly see the inside of the wheel with Cub weights installed, so I'm not certain what their logic is. They are also banning aftermarket axles in the Pro Stock class, and of course no oil as always. IMO they are headed in the complete wrong direction with this race, it's really a shame.

I'm guessing you meant your car is running 2.994, not 2.94 ?
Aftermarket axles have never been allowed in this race, In either class!

You are incorrect Sir. The Pro Stock class has allowed aftermarket axles the last two years, and most likely in 2015 as well, but I'm not certain on that.

I won’t argue that they have been allowed in the race. The fact of the matter is what the rules say and what they have let pass through... This is exactly why people speak poorly of this race. It does not say aftermarket axles are allowed. I. Have been to 2016 and 2017 and have copies of the rules for both races.

If X3 fenders won Street Stock this month, it means they lost Street Stock last month. I believe DWS fenders also hold the track record, pretty good considering the vast majority of the field are running X3 fenders. Point being, two completely different approaches can be equally effective.

It's odd you mention wheel weight wiggles, my experience has been the exact opposite. The cars I have built with wheel weights track straighter, and require less steer than traditional weighted cars I've built. I'm not saying I've built anywhere near the cars that you guys have, but my experience is what it is.

A Krytox like mix. 2.3 gram wheel 1.17. Hollow body car about 7 grams. I don't know if they will allow it in NYC. You can barely tell. It definitely sounds hollow. I haven't read the 2018 rules yet but I was told graphite only.

NYC is graphite only, also pay attention to your wheels. With 1.17 you are ok but with that wheel weight you either have a narrow wheel, which is not allowed or you have weight removed from the inside, which is also a no no. Hollow car body no problem as mentioned how do you get it stable at 7 grams though? When I go that light the car body has some give in it, which I normally solve with some 1/64 multiplex but that still adds quite a bit of weight.

I'm sorry but I'm lost....you first stated they "have never been allowed in this race", and now you're saying you won't argue that they have been allowed?

The Pro Stock rules have always permitted the use of aftermarket axles. Many on this forum who have attended the event will tell you the same.

Mojo,
Have you guys tried the half round weights at all? With the full round weights... it didn’t leave much that you could add in the way of cubes before being over weighted on the rear bumper. Maybe you guys were just pushing the envelope too far and that is why you got the wiggles? Since I don’t have a track to tune on... I usually go fairly conservative with my weighting strategy... using the room left over back there to try to taper the rear bumper for better aero. It seems to me that having extra trunk space is a nice problem to have. These days I am gradually starting to get more aggressive with my weighting strategy... but still think that anything more than around 2.3g behind the axles is sorta pushing it.

I never said they were allowed... only implying that they have been passed through.
Ok, let’s do this. Find the rules and post where it’s says aftermarket axles are allowed and I will gladly eat my words!

I thought you said you already had copies of the 2016 and 2017 rules?

Yes the wheels are lightened on the inside and slightly narrowed. I read the rules last night. 2.4 - 2.5 gram wheels are a better choice I think. The body started out at 7gram. We watched Bulldog's video on 6.9 gram body. We did add piece of 1/64 ply, plus sealing the wood and painting added more to it. We where surprised at how well it did. Considering we have never been below 3.00 prior. All of the information we gathered from here has really helped. Plus some luck.

Yea this is a spicy thread when this whole thing started and you said you were goin to New York I almost said "oh jees dont get Tre started on this again" but this went a completely different direction. Lol

--Not a shot at you Tre, just meant the last time you stated your opinion about the NY race somebody had an epic melt down. Lol

This is crazy! I ask one simple question about wheel weights and it has turned into a debate about axles ,full round ,half round. Who's used what, what's allowed. This is better than tv.

I would call it a discussion, not a debate. Healthy dialogue is a good thing, we can all learn from one another. Every voice has something to offer, even TRE. :)
